The STURDY ACT was signed into law on December 29, 2022!
PAT parents describe how the STURDY Act could have saved their children's lives,
and hundreds of others.
After nearly two decades of advocacy and the third time the STURDY ACT (Stop Tip-Overs of Unstable Risky Dressers on Youth) was introduced into the U.S. House and Senate, the parents of PAT led the collaboration of parent advocates, consumer advocates, IKEA, and the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) that culminated in the STURDY Act becoming law in December of 2022. The law went into effect on September 1st, 2023 and requires that all dressers and clothing storage furniture 26 inches in height and taller pass strong safety and stability tests that simulate the forces created when children up to 72 months of age interact with the furniture.
